As many had pointed out, last year, someone actually noticed that AVGN’s Polybius thumbnail art seems to be a duplicate of another thumbnail from another Youtube video. There seems to also be a problem in other aspects of James’ Polybius video. Academic channels like Kings and Generals always mention or put their sources whenever they make an informative video. I’ve seen documentaries put their references either in the details of the video or at the end of the video. Not doing so just shows that you are lazy, and if you’re in my research class, I would have automatically given you a 5 (which, in my country, is the lowest grade in college).Ĭiting researches isn’t even that hard for an informative Youtube video. And, yes, I agree that research and citation is a grueling process, but you have to do it in respect to the originator, EVEN if you have to comb through several other sources to get to the original source. It doesn't mean that some articles don't cite, doesn't mean that you too do not have to. They claim that this is the reason why some articles like Atlas Obscura's talk about many of Cat Despira’s research without even mentioning her in their article. But if you take this to court because the researcher didn’t ask for your permission for just a single sentence or a series of paragraphs, said court will not rule in your favor.Ī lot of Cinemassacre apologists are also arguing that James is in the right since Cat Despira’s article is old and sources get passed from one site to another, creating a series of “secondary sources” that muddle the reference list. Some of you might disagree with me on this because this seems to be not enough. Such an obligation is even more problematic if one of those sources is already dead. I have yet to hear someone actually make a research journal/article/video, or maybe even just create a Wikipedia entry, and ask every… SINGLE… one of her/his sources for permission (which can be between 20 to as many as 200+ sources). Most researchers who contact their sources do so to ask for more information, not to ask permission. Editing and putting a citation on a statement that isn’t yours is already enough. But in cases like these, it is not a requirement unless you plan to actually add the whole journal article into your own. This is true when it comes to music, art, video clips, etc. That one should ask permission first if they want to use a particular source. However, some are saying that citing isn’t enough. This is important for three reasons: (1) To make sure that you are telling everyone who read that this is not your idea/assessment, (2) To prevent anyone from accidentally citing that this originated from you in their OWN journal or article, (3) To allow readers to be referred to the actual journal or book if they want to learn more. If you are writing a book, journal, or thesis about a particular topic, especially those concerning experimental and investigative research, you MUST always cite sources. I have some statements about them that I both agree and disagree with. I’ve also been present and have assisted in court cases concerning plagiarism.Īnyone interested in my services can (wink) (wink) contact me at Bob Fossil, posts on the Polybius scandal and Cat DeSpira’s post, and the comments made by people below, were interesting for me. I have written many research papers, journals, and books in the scientific field, and have lectured, proofread, and assisted people in their research. As such, I have years of experience when it comes citing sources, references, and how to properly give credit to fellow researchers. And maybe some of you would like to read on what I have to say since I myself am a holder of a master’s degree in Research Writing (though my Bachelor’s Degree is Medical Laboratory Science). I want to share my opinions on this one because this is the scandal that really struck me hard. You can check out the whole thread and Cat DeSpira’s post here. Seeing that even the AVGN web show has also been tainted with plagiarism has made a dent in my heart.Ĭase in point, specifically, is the AVGN Polybius Video. And while I never really gave a thought about Monster Madness, I do enjoy classic AVGN. I applaud the effort and hard work of all those involved in examining and assessing these plagiarism allegations. I’ve been following these recent posts about plagiarism allegations put forth against Cinemassacre, and hot damn have there been a few already.
